ISABELLA –West of the Warrego.

“I TELL YOU my friends, it’s enough to set a man on fire. Just imagine!  Land!  Thousands of acres spread out before your eyes.  There for the taking.  There to use.  To stock.  To graze.  Who is there to hold us back?  We have land here.  But we could be kings!    Who is going to stick to the counties? Stay on the fringes?”  There were loud cries of assent.

Angus McInlay’s  excitement enthuses his distant neighbours to grasp the opportunity to expand their holdings, while it  exists.  Will they form an exploration party? The prospects look good.  A magnificent proposal, mind boggling in its enormity.

But events in the South - in Bathurst Bendigo and Ballarat present a conflicting  lure. The lure of Gold!  Finding a fortune in the next shovel full of soil?

Isabella is afraid.  This land – this great expanse - the mystery of the land - the totally unknown, unexplored – uninhabited  by white settlement, land  - the risks to life itself, tug  at her heart.

Angus reassures. “I will come back to you my Belle.  You know I will come back to you.”  And her assertion,  “No Angus, I don’t  know that.”

“ISABELLA – West of the Warrego”, is a story of love, faithfulness and perseverance in the face of hardship and loss – and survival through possible financial ruin,  It is a story of acceptance and going on when nothing can be changed – and the reward in a grown family, friendship and respect  and the ultimate, ‘Land fit for a king.’

As you encounter ‘history in the living’ in the pages of this book, you will feel closer to those who have gone before, in the hard places – the hard times.  Those who shaped our country and passed on a legacy that has come to be known as the epitome of the Australian Spirit.

THE LAST ROSE

A story of legacies and seeing a new light

Rudy!  Rudy?

Frances jerked round and stood immobilised.  Nan was greeting her companion; shaking hands; talking excitedly; assuring him of his welcome.  Fanny’s mind and emotions were in turmoil.  Rudy!  Rudolph Brossman! This man, this kind stranger, whose company she so enjoyed, was Rudolph Brossman, the tutor for today’s seminar!

This man – this charmer - who made her feel as she had not felt since her youth, was the man who had painted ‘THAT’ painting. Whatever was she to do?  What sort of man was he to portray such a thing on canvas?

Frances Jane McNaught of “Grey Gums” Roma, is about to have her conventions tested - her calm ordered place in society threatened, the safe cocoon she had created for herself after that hard time, in danger of invasion.

This romance of a free thinking artist/WWII veteran and a conservative, traditional, devout, Western Queensland woman each with legacies of WWII, is sometimes stormy – particularly when Rudy criticises ‘the Church’.

In weaving this story of two opposites,

Daphne Saxby Taylor beguiles us to tears and laughter.

Mary Anne

"Sold!" wept Mary Anne on her deathbed. "Sold for a bottle of rum!"

"Love him," her mother had said. "Loving is not always easy. It will mean caring for him, cooking and cleaning for him -- and bearing his children. But it is a hard man indeed, who can resist consistent love for ever."

It had all begun in peaceful Hertfordshire. But boredom, recklessness, his swashbuckling life in the army of the East India Company - had changed all that. Then had befallen a chance encounter in far away New South Wales - an enslavement to rum - and an overseer's words "The establishment looks more favourably on married men. More chance of a pardon. And possibly of a grant of land."

Gentle Mary Anne becomes an unwitting player in this heart gripping story of life as it was in the penal colony of New South Wales in the mid nineteenth century.

MARY ANNE - a compelling story with an imperative that drives the reader to the last page.

Caroline

“CAROLINE”, a story of deep love and its haunting legacy, is set in the North East corner of south Australia, an area of great uninhabited magnitude and isolation even today. So much more in the early days of settlement.

Willie, Caroline’s husband, like so many men of his time in Australia, is consumed with the desire to take up land. Land in uncharted isolated areas.

This is the story of their adventure, and life on a station property in the mid 19th century. Of the disaster that was to strike Caroline with all its savagery, leaving in its wake a haunting legacy of pain and guilt.

A present day researcher, looking into these past events, has the difficult task of getting to the bottom of it all. To her surprise, she finds herself bringing release and peace ‘across time’.

(Editor’s quote - ‘In this historical romance, Daphne Saxby Taylor takes us to the heart of life in the Australian outback in the nineteenth century.)

Wilhelmina

A story of dreams dashed - Yet strangely fulfilled.

The story of “WILHELMINA” begins in the Heidelberg castle of the Grand Duke of Bardon .

“That was a most remarkable performance for one so young, Miss Wilhelmina. You have gone straight to the soul of the music. I shall look forward with delight to working with you.” The speaker was the great Frederick Chopin, now addressing the budding young concert pianist before him.

But it was not to be. Plans were already afoot for this German family to migrate from their politically unstable homeland to faraway New South Wales - and to the even more remote Upper Hunter.

Dashed dreams, foregone ‘royal court’ status, family tragedy and financial insecurity - all were to fail to dampen this girl’s indomitable spirit. Pioneering in nineteenth century rural Australia was to bring out in her faith and courage - qualities to be tested and refined by a sometimes wayward husband, but contributing to a quite amazing outcome.

“WILHELMINA” tells the story of tough love and forgiveness - and their power to fulfill dreams in a totally unexpected way.

Star O'er The Valley

In the rush and bustle of the twenty first century, it is a rare delight to find a collection of simple yet profound poems like "STAR O'ER THE VALLEY", to bring us back to a necessary, thoughtful appreciation of the things of beauty around us.

Daphne Taylor treats the reader to a 'rhapsody of words' the sound of which remains long after the book is closed.

Some of these works could be called 'mood poems', they so quietly and so effectively lead us into a realm where anticipation of delights is high and deep feelings rise. Others tell a story of great pathos and love.

"STAR O'ER THE VALLEY' will lead many a careful reader to a deeper love of the author of that beauty of which the poems speak.

Some of My Favourite Recipes

INTRODUCTION

This book is a collection of

'Some of my favourite Recipes'.

It also contains 'Some Memories'

that those recipes evoke when I use them;

and my mind goes back to people, places and events in one  way or another associated with a particular recipe.

Memories -

of long ago, even to the years of my childhood and the farm at Lewinsbrook – and years later, the

'shower recipe tea', my sister-in-law, Ena, gave for me just before we were married;

yet also quite recent, in the case of recipes I have acquired in recent times and which have found their way into my 'Favourites".

Perhaps some of the glimpses of life over those years, may stir memories in your minds, those of you who can remember old  times and old ways.

And may  perhaps be of interest to you who are of younger generations.

I hope you enjoy the recipes and the memories

or little stories,or the thoughts, attached to them.

Here they are with my love .
